Mansfield Boys and Bishop Feehan Freshman Girls Take MPC Summer League Titles

On Sunday afternoon, two teams were crowned champions of the Varsity Mass Premier Summer League.  The Mansfield Hornets took the title in the boys division, beating King Philip in the championship game 71-50.

King Philip played hard in the first half, with much credit to KP guard, Tim Smith who scored 9 points off of the three point line. At half-time, Mansfield had a narrow lead of 35-28.

Starting the second half, Mansfield scored 10 unanswered points extending their lead to 45-28. The Hornets set their pace and were unstoppable after that opening second half run--winning the game by a respectable 21 points.

The Mansfield Hornets were led by Senior Guard Rocky DeAndrade (16 points), Junior Forward Brendan Hill (14 points), and Junior Guard Ryan Boulter (13 points).

Mansfield finished the Mass Premier Summer League with a 17-1 record.

The real surprise of the day was the eventual Varsity Girls Mass Premier Summer League Champ--The  Shamrocks, made up of Bishop Feehan Freshman (Class of 2017). The Shamrocks were originally playing in the JV Mass Premier Summer League but were never challenged. In the JV league, the team was 8-0 with an average margin of victory of 53 points. Due to this impressive record, the team was moved up to the varsity bracket for the playoffs. In the preliminary round, the Shamrock girls defeated the Bishop Feehan JV team (White) 49-27. They then defeated Franklin 60-27, and Brockton 71-53, to get to the semifinals. In the semifinals the Shamrocks were matched up against the Bishop Feehan varsity team. The freshman upset the varsity team 54-39.

In the championship game it looked like the Shamrocks cinderella run was about to come to an end. Bellingham led most of the way until guard Katie Nelson put the Shamrocks ahead 39-36 with 5:30 to go in the game. Bellingham came back to tie the game 41-41. Nelson would then score another basket with that would put the Shamrocks up for good. The Shamrocks would end up winning the game 47-43.

Molly Lahiff led the Shamrocks with 13 points, while Nelson added 10 points.

Here are the champions in the other divisions:
JV Boys - Braintree
JV Girls - North Attleboro (Red)
Freshman Boys "A"- Mansfield (Green)
Freshman Boys "B"- Medfield
Freshman Girls - Norwood

Scott Arsenault Shoots Lights Out at the A Shot For Life Challenge

On Saturday afternoon, some of the best shooters in the Bay State competed in the first-ever Shot For Life Challenge. Ten student athletes shot for two hours to raise money for the fight against cancer. The rules were pretty simple, shoot, shoot, and shoot some more.

For the first 20 minutes, the shooters could attempt 15-foot shots. Most of the participants shot Free Throws, but a few went the unconventional route of shooting 15ft bank shots or moving around to different spots as if they were playing a game of "Around the World."

For the second 20 minutes, shooters could only attempt three pointers. To finish off the first hour of the challenge participants could shoot 15-footers again but Free Throws were not allowed.

At the halfway mark, Walpole's Scott Arsenault was in first place shooting 89.2%. Brookline's Shiraz Mumtaz (shooting 82.9%) and Newton North's Tommy Mobley (78.7%) were in second and third, respectively.

After a five minute break the participants started the second hour of the challenge continuing to shoot 15 footers with no Free Throws. With 30 minutes remaining in the challenge, all 3 point shots that the participants made counted for double. This caused the final shooting percentages to be weighted.

At the end of the two hour challenge Arsenault was named champion shooting a weighted shooting percentage of 107.1% . His actual shooting percentage was 90.5% which is amazing. Mumtaz (81.8%) and Mobley (79.2%) finished in second and third.

The field of participants included Ben Judson (St. John's Prep), Sam Bohmiller (Franklin), Nick McKenna (Danvers), Ryan Roach (Cardinal Spellman), Mike Nelson (Bishop Feehan), Jake Foote (Duxbury) and Tyler Gibson (Rockland). Vinny Clifford (Danvers) was scheduled to compete but had to pull out of the challenge due to a recent knee injury he suffered.

As of right now the A Shot For Life Challenge raised over $10,000 towards cancer research.

A Shot For Life Foundation(ASFL) was created by Mike Slonina is 2011. Mike's first event put him in the record books, LITERALLY! On April 9, 2011 Mike shot jumpers for 24 hour straight. That day ASFL raised nearly $30,000.
